The Lion Roars Diary - November 2007

29th November Mark McGhee is the new favourite for the Scotland manager's job...

...More news north of the border, Derek McInnes is the new St Johnstone boss, and says,  "You normally get a job when a team has been struggling but there's not a lot wrong here."

26th November the Daily Mail quotes Kenny Jackett's interest in re-signing Jamie O'Hara, "We'll keep in touch with Spurs. He's very popular and his dad is a Millwall fan, so that helps"...

...Marcus Bignot extends his loan period to 9th February and Bryan Hodge extends his until 5th January...

...In a remarkable game, the youth side are losing 3-0 with just four minutes left on the clock n the FA Youth Cup. If it was a first team game literally everyone in the ground would consider it the best game of their lives - the youngsters come back to level in injury time before adding another couple in extra time to earn a match with manchester city on the next round.

24th November Millwall 2 Yeovil Town 1: After a slow start and a first half goal concession, Kenny Jackett changes it around in the second half, does a lot of shouting, tries the big man up front thing, and generally makes it happen. An excellent period of pressure football sees the Lions equalise through Jamie O'Hara, before Ali Fuseini nets the winner late on...
...Afterwards the new Lions boss says, "We showed great character in the second half and we really saw the crowd's passion during that period. The noise the fans made really excited me."

23rd November Luton Town go into Administration and are immediately deducted ten points by the Football League. This takes them below Millwall in the League table. It also means that they will need to recoup losses quickly. Ahmet Brkovic says, "'I'm enjoying it here - we just need to get points on the board." Hmmm...
...On the eve of his last game of an impressive loan spell, Jamie O'Hara also wants to continue to play for the Lions, "I've spoken to the manager [Kenny Jackett] about it and if things aren't working out [at Tottenham] then I'll be looking to come back."

22nd November It is that cash that gives chairman Berylson the right to say stuff like this to the Southwark News, "I walked into a pub less than two miles from the ground and sat down with a pint of John Smiths and a leek and potato pie. Four guys realised who I was and started mouthing off about asset stripping and that I wouldn't leave the pub alive. I said that I'd consider my chances one on one with all four of them, but not four on one, that's sheer cowardice."

21st November Millwall Plc. release their annual accounts to the stock exchange… We're in big trouble without John Berylson's cash.

19th November Kenny Jackett starts making his changes. Former Lions keeper Tony Roberts joins as part time goalkeeping coach, and Simon Pullen adds to the scouting staff.

17th November Bristol Rovers 2 Millwall 1: Kenny Jackett gets his first ‘travesty’ as Millwall manager out of the way. Don’t worry, he’ll get used to it. An injury depleted Lions side outplay Rovers throughout, and Ali Fuseini grabs an early lead after having to replace the injured Alan Dunne. Zak Whitbread is cruelly adjudged to have fouled someone somewhere for a penalty, and Lewis Haldane scores the winner deep into injury time…

…Manager Jackett says, “Initially I couldn’t see an offence and was very surprised when the referee pointed to the spot. It was very frustrating and with the second goal that went in on 93 minutes. At times we played some good football and showed some class at times, and with the nature of the goals I am very disappointed.”

15th November Millwall sign their first stereotype in living memory. He’s bigger than sixth foot, and judging by hthe size of his shorts, at least thirty stone. Catford boy, Adebayo Akinfenwa signs on a month to month contract, and says, "I am a London boy anyway, and grew up with Ryan Smith - we used to play football all the time as kids and now hopefully we'll get a chance to play in the same team together here. I have worked with Kenny Jackett at Watford and Swansea so he knows what I can do and I can't wait to work with him again."

11th November At least it’s a home tie – the Lions get Bournemouth in the next round of the FA Cup.

10th November Altrincham 1 Millwall 2: Chris Senior opened the scoring at the end of a lacklustre first half, with a stunning volley. Alan Dunne equalised from the spot, as Chris Lane was sent off for handling on the line, and Will Hoskins secured the win. It was a much better second half display and a fair result…

…The game is shown on match of the Day, the first time Millwall have appeared on it since black and white television…

…It’s a convenient day all round for Kenny Jackett, who says afterweards, “I live just down the road. I’m just going back to clear my things up and I don’t know when I’ll be back up this way. But I’m just pleased to have come away from here with a victory.”

9th November With an injury crisis befitting a struggling team, new manager Kenny Jackett brings 33 year old right back Marcus Bignot in from QPR on loan…

…Jackett also makes an early point to the players, “I need my players to want to be at this club. You can be very talented, but that won’t help us unless you are prepared to work hard for the club and the fans. Everyone has to want to be here, whether you are on loan for a month or have a three-year contract”…

…As Jamie O’Hara returns to Tottenham after the expiration of his loan period, the Lions boss says, “I have only seen him in one game so far but I was not disappointed with what I saw. I would very much like to have him back in January if possible."

8th November The club announce its annual losses. About £5m these days, apparently…

…Quickly removed from the losses are Pat Holland and Kevin Dearden, as Kenny Jackett makes space for his own men…

…Stuart Till tells the Southwark News that the losses will not stop the spending, “Substantial financial support will be made available if needed, and with twelve first team players out going into this game, it is very likely that this will be the case.”

7th November John Berylson confirms the previous day’s announcement, "Kenny was one of the first names on our list after we had drawn up our criteria for a new manager. Initially we thought we would not get our man, but we remained determined to try, and eventually, after meeting with him on Tuesday afternoon, he agreed to join us. We were careful to take our time and we did speak to a number of very good candidates, but Kenny is the one who came through as the strongest in the end and we were delighted when he accepted our offer”…

…Will Hoskins extends his loan stay to a final third month.

6th November Kenny Jackett is officially named as Millwall manager...

...Millwall 2 Swansea City 2: With just 40 games between them, Millwall field their most inexperienced midfield ever against the Football League’s best away side. The Lions outplay the visitors throughout. It’s a bit of a counter-attacking lesson for at least Andy Frampton, who is at fault for both Swansea’s goals. Whitbread caps a man of the match performance with a goal and the boo boys are further humbled by Alan Dunne’s performance and penalty, which is just about the best we will ever see: Top corner…

…Richard Shaw says, “The boys gave us absolutely everything tonight. It was hard, two games in three days. There was a willingness and desire to compete for second balls and to go and play good football as well, against a good Swansea side, it was very good.”

5th November Some foot stomping is done and a decision is made. Kenny Jackett was the original choice, and is spoken to again about an official appointment tomorrow…

…FA Youth Cup result: Camberley Town 0 Millwall 5.

4th November Yeovil’s chairman makes it clear that his manager is going nowhere and is willing to pay more money to keep him.

3rd November Millwall 0 Hartlepool United 1: After creating the best chances, a smash and grab effort by Hartlepool sees the Lions troop off to more boos. It wasn’t pretty…

…Colin West says, “With the chances we created, we probably deserved something from the game, but we were flat for some reason. Hartlepool were a lot more alert and alive than us every time the ball broke free, and eventually that cost us.”

2nd November The growing injury crisis sees the Lions sign Bryan Hodge, a 20 year old midfielder, from Blackburn…

…Ben May is also recalled from Scunthorpe…

…The activity is suspected to signal the arrival of Russell Slade from Yeovil to take over the manager’s job.

1st November Another managerial update: Alleged target Mark Stimpson gets the Gillingham job, a contract denying him another league job means Peter Taylor has to head for Stevenage, Alex Rae is apparently rejected, and Mick Harford is supposed to be in the frame, alongside Russell Slade.
