The Lion Roars Diary - July 2007

31st July Millwall 0 Southampton 1: How dull was that? A taste of things to come perhaps, as Millwall play most of the game without goalscorers or wingers. The visitors score against the run of midfield boredom. The second half includes a great ten minute cameo by Preston Edwards in goal, but little else.

30th July Marvin Elliott finally gets the big move he has craved. Bristol City for an alleged fee of £150,000.

28th July Millwall 2 Aldershot 0: After the Hampshire police refuse to sanction the match because of fears of violence, the game is held behind closed doors at The Den. Gary Waddock's side succumb to goals from Danny Spiller and Chris Hackett as the Lions run out comfortable winners. No Byfield; fuelling rumours of a training ground bust up.

27th July Filipe Morais joins Hibernian as the clearout continues...

...According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool midfielder Lee Peltier rejects a six-month loan deal with Millwall forYeovil Town.

26th July As Marvin Williams leaves for Yeovil, the 20 year old striker says, "About three and a half weeks ago I got a call saying that Russell was interested. There were a few clubs interested at that time, so I just sat around and held tight. To be honest, Russell was really persistent and he was the one who really came in and pushed for me. From there I always knew that I would be going to Yeovil, so I'm glad that it's done now."

24th July Ebbsfleet 2 Millwall 0: A rather embarrassing performance against a team with more spirit and commitment on the night. Paul Robinson sits it out, but it's mostly the first team that will play at Doncaster on the opening day.

21st July Motherwell 1 Millwall 1: A better performance as the players improve their fitness levels. Two good goals, the second from Brammer, and a team line up against Mark McGhee's charges that would be near to the first team for the opening game. Except for Kevin Dearden though, who is highly unlikely to be on the bench as a reserve keeper. Substitute pie-eater maybe, but not substitute goalie...
...Willie Donachie says, "We were giving the ball away a bit needlessly, in the first and last ten minutes, but it was a great exercise"...
...Manager Donachie reflects on his early pre-season preparations, "We played against three teams who were a week ahead of us and had played three games more than us. There is no way around it, hard work is the only way to get match fit”...
...According to the Western Daily Press, Yeovil are about to sign Marvin Williams for £50,000.

20th July Spurred on by internet messageboard outrage, the Miilwall Supporters Club are forced into issuing a statement condemning the political aspect of the forthcoming Sierra Leone friendly. The Daily Mail immediately pick up on it. Now everyone knows that some of the more vocal Millwall fans do not want to celebrate the abolition of slavery. you kind of know where this one is heading...
...The South London Press claim that Poiul Hubertz will sign for Belgian club St Truiden today...
...A St Truiden spokesman says that Poul Hubertz will not be signing for them today...
...Willie Donachie discusses trialist Toumani Diagouraga, “He has done quite well. We will keep him here in Scotland for another week and I will hopefully be able to make a decision then. But FA rules dictate I can only play someone in two games while they are on trial, so I will not be able to use him in the friendly at Motherwell on Saturday."

19th July Willie Donachie re-iterates his plans for the season, "There are a few having trials elsewhere or talking to other clubs, but I reckon as many as four or five will go. I don't want to talk about who they are or where they might be going because it wouldn't be right to say before anything has actually happened. However, I can tell you the 17 outfield players here in Scotland at the moment will definitely be involved with the club this season."

18th July Falkirk 1 Millwall 0: Willie Donachie leaves most of his first choice players on the bench for this warm up. The players look fitter, despite the narrow defeat...
...The Daily Mail reckons Millwall are in for Tottenham's young striker Lee Barnard.

14th July Dundee 2 Millwall 1: A first pre-season friendly against Alex Rae's side. It's a fitness affair with two different Lions sides in each half. Watford's Toumani Diagouraga trials and Ben May nets the goal...
...Dundee boss Rae says afterwards, "Millwall are a decent outfit and it was a better test than we'd had in the previous couple of games, we're just progressing towards the start of the season. Overall I thought we did OK."

12th July Lennie Pidgeley breaks a toe in training and will miss the Scottish tour games.

11th July After the Daily Star reveals it, the club have to come clean: 16 year old striker David Amoo signs for Liverpool for £200,000 plus clauses. The Scouse thieves, among others, are also looking at Preston Edwards...
...Edwards has however been given a squad number. Harris gets his number 9 back, Frampton gets number 3, Dunne number 7 and Alexander gets number 8. Williams has a number, but Elliott and Hubertz do not.

10th July Former Lions news: Marc Bircham joins Yeovil Town and Darren Ward joins Wolves. After recently signing for Colchester United (Guess who their next manager will be?) Teddy Sheringham is spotted at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Robbie Ryan is at Welling United.

9th July Poul Hubertz is given permission to talk to some tin pot Belgian outfit. Millwall will expect money if he leaves.

5th July Ryan Smith completes his £150,000 move to The Den. Manager Donachie says, "He is an excellent acquisition for us."

3rd July Young defender Jack Obersteller signs for Wycombe Wanderers.

2nd July Pat Holland signs a two year contract to assist the manager in a more official capacity. Kevin Dearden also gets a new two year deal.

1st July The fatties return to training. There is some serious huffing and puffing at the end of the day.
