The Lion Roars Diary - December 2009

28th December  Millwall 2  Bristol Rovers 0: Steve Morison showed everyone he's finally getting into his stride now wearing a Millwall shirt. He scored one and almost another which was eventually put in by Rovers Pat Baldwin in the 92nd minute, leaving the final score 2-0 and making it Rovers seventh consecutive away defeat.

26th December  Norwich City 2 Millwall 0: The Lions again let down their travelling support by losing to the canaries 2-0. The 1,251 loyal fans who gave up their boxing day, having to be there early for a 12.45 kick off deserved medals.

21st December  Players went head-to-head with their fans & Lewisham NHS stop smoking advisors in a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the Smoke Free United Challenge. They had just three minuets to kick a football through a small opening in a six ft high, eight foot wide Smoke Free United goal board. The players won the shoot-out 7-2.

19th December Charlton 4 Millwall  4: The fixture we'd all been waiting for, disgraceful refereeing leading to some of the worst decisions I've ever seen as a supporter gave the Addicks two penalties and got Jimmy Abdou sent off. Despite that, the Lions Drew 4-4 at the Valley and gave a performance that every Lions fan could be proud of.

17th December Torquay United 1 Millwall 3: The Millwall youth boys beat Torquay youth 3-1 with goals from Kiernan Hughes Mason, Grant Ludford & John Marquis to put them through to the next round and a home tie with Barnsley (hopefully 16th Jan).

15th December  After the AGM on 11th December The South London Press reports that Lions chairman John Berylson has expressed his frustration at having to fight off obstructive tactics by major shareholder Graham Lacey every year. (I don't think you're the only one John… I think we're all sick to death of Lacey & his dodgy agenda)...

…Millwall & Charlton Athletic publicise the fact that their League One match at the Valley will be dedicated to the memories of Jimmy Mizen & Rob Knox, two young supporters of the respective clubs murdered in street violence incidents during 2008. Both teams' shirts logos will be replaced by a powerful, one-off special edition Street Violence Ruins Lives logo. Barry and Margaret Mizen & Sally and Colin Knox will be introduced to the fans and will be wearing the one-off shirts with the names of their late sons on their backs. After the match, the two sets of shirts will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Jimmy Mizen Foundation & the Rob Knox Memorial Fund.

12th December  Millwall 2 Walsall 1:  Steve Morison scores a brace in the Millwall Christmas home game (although not that close to Christmas) and gives his confidence a much needed boost. Thank god Byfield didn't score.

11th December  Neil Harris according to news reports today has been linked with a stint in the A-League next season with NQ Fury as a replacement for Central Coast Mariners bound Daniel McBreen. Harris 32 has also reportedly signalled an interest in regards to playing in Australia's top flight completion.

10th December Darren Byfield looks ahead to his Den return with Walsall by telling Southwark News, "We aren't going to fear Millwall and I can't wait to go there and get abused! I was there at the start of the season with Oldham and got it then and it'll be the same again, they won't change their mind on that. They were upset by the way I left but they don't know the full story and that's something I don't like going into.”

9th December Millwall 4 Staines 0: Jackett is absent with the flu, leaving Joe Gallen in charge, as goals from Morison, Smith, Dunne and Schofield clinch an easy replay win to set up an FA Cup third round tie with Derby County...

...The attendance of 3,452 is perhaps a result of the FA screening the game live on its website.

8th December Gary Alexander looks to be out of action for at least 3 months after needing more surgery on his heel.

5th December Hartlepool 3 Millwall 0: Morison twice hits the woodwork early on but it is the home side who take control, with three goals before the half-hour mark. Disgracefully, Millwall obligingly spend the next hour making little attempt to get anything from the game...

...Kenny Jackett falls short of apologising to the visiting fans. He says, “To concede three times - when we have held our opponents in our three previous away games - was not good. We need better performances than that.”

4th December South London Press reports that Leeds are to offer £160,000 and a 10 per cent sell-on clause for Zak Whitbread, plus a further £80,000 promotion bonus.

3rd December John Berylson tells Southwark News Millwall’s transfer intentions during the January loan window. He says, “We need some things - some obvious, some not so obvious - but there’ll be one or two people we’ll look very seriously at in January. “We’re narrowing down the strikers we’re looking at and we’re down to two or three names now. We want someone who’ll wear our shirt for two or three years minimum and who’ll have an impact. I know whom I want - the question is whether I can get him or not. I have a first pick, a second pick and a third pick”…

...Andy Ambler reveals an idea to mark the club’s 125th anniversary next season. He says, “One of the considerations for next year is that we will wear a Dundee blue kit".

1st December Millwall 3 MK Dons 2: Millwall make hard work of beating opponents who are appalling in the first half. Frampton, his injured hand protected by a cast, opens the scoring and Hackett gives the Lions a two-goal half time lead. But former Lion Jermaine Easter scores immediately after the restart and MK Dons score again to equalise. It is thus left to Morison, after coming close on several occasions, to clinch the win in the last minute...

...Darren Ward makes his 150th league appearance for Millwall.
