The Lion Roars Diary - August 2007

29th August Darren Byfield leaves for Bristol City and then says he has never been so excited about a move. Whilst some question Willie Donachie's philosophies regarding team building it is difficult to argue that getting rid of a player of this type, irrespective of how good he may be, can be bad for any club...

...Alleged target Lee Barnard, the young Tottenham striker, joins Crewe on a six month loan deal.

28th August Manager Donachie admits that the door to Chris Hackett is not closed if someone loses, "form". It is expected that Hackett will be the only name on the team-sheet for the forthcoming match with Huddersfield.

27th August Neil Ardley calls time on his playing career. He may rejoin his mate Dave Jones at Cardiff City to make use of his coaching badges.

25th August Southend United 1 Millwall 0: A truly woeful performance with no attacking impetus and lacklustre performances from a number of players. The defence did well, especially Chris Day to keep the score down, but as soon as the goal went in the manager went potty with his substitutions and alterations to the playing system and the inevitable couldn't come quick enough...
...Willie Donachie reacts to the match, “It was a pretty even game in the first half, but they got the break and that was it.”

24th August Left sided midfielder, Jamie O’Hara joins from Spurs. The plan is a month’s loan in the hope that he will enjoy it enough to stay longer. Or something.

21st August Less than 3,000 spectators turn up for the 1-1 draw between Ghana and Senegal. Fortunately, the alleged thirty grand was paid up front and any profits or losses were the promoter’s.

18th August Millwall 1 Cheltenham Town 0: A Danny Spiller goal on the stroke of half time separates two hard-working but rather flair-less teams in a dreadfully dull game...
...Manager Donachie says afterwards, "For the first half I thought we played really good football and if we had got the second goal it would have been all over. Cheltenham are no mugs. To win 1-0 was a great start and I'm delighted"...

...Danny Spiller's winner is the 5,000th League goal in Millwall's history.

15th August Jersey based striker Peter Vincenti signs and says, "'I'm delighted, this is a great opportunity for me and hopefully I can move forward. It's a big step up and over the past two weeks I've played two 90-minute games against Tooting and Mitcham and Sutton United and came on as a sub against Kingstonian"...
...The club are fined £30,000 for failing to improve their disciplinary standards. A further £30,000 is added on if it doesn't get better this year.

14th August Northampton Town 2 Millwall 0: After running all over the Cobblers, Millwall pepper the barn door frame to lose to Andy Kirk and Bradley Johnson goals. Hubertz sets the second up...
...Willie Donachie says, "It was bizarre really, there were a lot of good chances, but it's goals that count."

13th August Millwall clear up the confusion that is Samy Mawene by releasing him from his contract.

11th August Doncaster Rovers 0 Millwall 0: After a quiet last week's build up the lack of goalmouth action is underway. Willie's 'big strong men' work tirelessly to protect their nil and even see a Ben May goal disallowed for being scored by an away team. Chris Day keeps the lads in it and a point is a fair result...

...Afterwards, Willie says, "For the first half hour we couldn't really get into it, but after that we had more chances than they did. The second half was much the same. I thought our chances were more clear cut than theirs"...

...Oh glory be, it's Swansea away in the Paint Pot.

4th August Millwall 2 Sierra Leone 1: This was all very odd. One half of the ground looks and feels normal, the gentle waft of blow, and the ocassional, but unmistakable, "caaaaant", but the other looks like a cross between the Nottingh Hill Carnival and a clown convention. Africans turn up in the hundreds wearing all sorts of Americanized bling and low riding jeans with pants lofted up their midriffs. The weird ocassion culminates in a last minute goal for Gary Alexander, who adds to Neil Harris's 3rd minute opener, and thus denies us penalties before a Community Cup thing is won...

...Poul Hubertz leaves for Northampton Town. The club refuse to tell anyone whether they have received any money for him...

...Millwall's other goalscorer Darren Byfield, is nowhere to be seen. He wishes he had been sent to Coventry, but instead, training ground and car park incidents with Richard Shaw and Alan Dunne mean he has merely been sent to the youths to train with them.

2nd August Gavin Grant is released from police custody as charges are dropped.
