The Lion Roars Diary - April 2009

30th April Millwall are second favourites for the Play Offs, behind Leeds. With MK Dons third faves you might want to talk to people that know about betting odds - there's money to be made somewhere...
...The Leeds United Trust and the Lions Trust issue a joint statement condemning the ticket allocations for the Play Offs...
...Zak Whitbread is the lone Lion in the PFA League One squad of the season.

28th April Gary Alexander signs the contract offer and will now stay at the club until the summer of 2011...
...The ticket allocations for the away legs of the Play Off matches are: Scunthorpe (1,600), MK Dons (2,000), Tranmere Rovers (2,100), and Leeds, which is the one we all know it is going to be; 1,000. Yes, just 1,000, and they get the same for their trip to The Den, despite averaging well over 20,000 this season.

27th April The PFA League One team of the year is announced and perhaps unsurprisingly, no Millwall players are included...
...Former Lion Steve Crawford is named East Fife manager.

25th April Millwall 2 - 1 Leyton Orient: David Forde saves a first half penalty before Orient make their inferiority count with the lead anyway. Millwall dominate throughout and have a stack of chances and shots, but they have to wait until a well taken 72nd minute goal by Alexander to breath sufficient life into proceedings and for him to add a late winner…
…On the penalty - it is the fourth Tony Craig has conceded this season and David Forde has saved three of them. Now there's an interesting statistic…
…Manager Jackett admits afterwards, "We did everything but score [in the first half], but we just couldn't find that final pass. That improved as the game went on and slowly, we wore them down"…
…Prior to the game, Andy Frampton receives his Player of the Year trophy and Lewis Grabban picks up the Young Player version. Framps says in the matchday programme, "It's the first thing I've ever won. I don't know why it's me though - you'd have to ask the fans"...
…Also confirmed on the day; Scott Barron and Andy Frampton have both signed the two year deals they were offered…
…It's a busy day - the new kit is revealed in the matchday programme. It is shiny and has a big picture of a lion on it. We have nothing to add on the issue.

24th April After being spotted at a Stevenage match, Kenny Jackett tries to play down speculation linking the Lions with Borough striker Steve Morison, "He is a player I have monitored but we have not made a bid. And there is nothing imminent."

23rd April With Leeds United looking the likely Play Off opponents, Millwall close their membership scheme.

21st April A draw for Scunthorpe means Millwall cannot mathematically miss out on the Play Offs…
…Gary Alexander's red card against Bristol Rovers is rescinded. The result isn't...
...One player that won't make the Play Offs is Ashley Grimes, who stupidly gets himself sent off in a reserve match.

18th April Bristol Rovers 4 - 2 Millwall: Some fairly pitiful defending sees Bristol Rovers storm into the lead, before Abdou equalises. More comical defending leads to a second for the home side before the pivotal moment of the match. The ball bounces up and hits Alexander on the chest in the Lions area. The referee sends him off and gives Rovers a penalty; which Lambert dispatches. Ten man Millwall dominate the second period and are unlucky to just score just once more…
…Kenny Jackett isn't happy, "We can look at some of the referee's decisions. Should Alexander have been sent off? The players assured me, no - the ball hit his chest. But again it was a free header"...
...Sad news reaches TLR Towers: Charlton Athletic have been relegated. We just don't have enough tears.

17th April Andy Frampton is injured (whiplash) in a car accident, and will miss a couple of games.

13th April Millwall 2 - 0 Peterborough United: What can only be described as a great performance. It was industrious, well-planned, and complete in its execution. The Lions dominated in defence, midfield and attack, with the spine solid and the support and closing down superb. The visitors were effectively hit by a steam-roller. Although it did take a thrice taken penalty to stir the television pundits into a frenzy, despite admissions that Millwall were well worth the win. Martin converted the penalty that Alexander simply couldn't, and Price made sure with a second goal…
…Kenny Jackett is understandably delighted with his players efforts, but there is no doubt about the TV talking point, "Obviously the twice retaken penalty is the talking point. Their keeper does come off his line but you rarely see them given. Most keepers move but the rule is you have to stay on the line. I thought we could have had another penalty in the second half when Gabriel Zakuani handled but the ref was never going to give that!"…
…Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said, "Millwall were terrific tonight. We can't have any complaints because they were better than us all over the pitch. I don't really want to talk about the penalty but I feel sorry for our keeper Joe Lewis because he's made two good saves there. My only hope was Gary Alexander would take the third"…
…David Forde makes his 50th appearance this season.

10th April Yeovil Town 2 - 0 Millwall: Smash and grab teams can hardly complain when they have it done to them, but that is what happened at Huish Park. Millwall dominated throughout, but the home side effectively killed off the Lions automatic promotion hopes (while Peterborough could only draw themselves), with a two goal win. Alan Dunne was also red carded for putting in two tackles that barely registered among those of the home side's punishable fouls that went unpunished…
…Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton explains the easy plan that brought home the win, "I'm really pleased with the boys. The effort, the game plan that we stuck to, keeping our two banks of four with Gavin Tomlin playing a little bit deeper than he usually does. We knew that they was going to attack us and come at us, we had to sit back a little bit and hit them on the break at times."

9th April Fans FC reports that, "highly-rated Iceland U-16 international Ingolfur Sigurdsson is training at Millwall. Liverpool, Chelsea, Celtic, Reading and Hearts have been tracking the KR Reykjavik teenager for some time - described by his agent, Olafur Gardarsson, as "a terrific young boy, left footed with good pace". Gardarsson maintains that Sigurdsson wants to play his football in the UK, but is nevertheless "open minded about where he could go", so Heerenveen and Aalesunds FK could also be in the running to sign the young prodigy.

4th April Millwall 3 - 1 Walsall: Jason Price opened the scoring in a bit of a comeback match for the Lions. It was only one defeat, but with such a lame home record in comparison to the away form it seemed like any result was possible prior to the start, which is odd for a promotion chasing team. It was a much better performance too, and despite Jabo Ibehre's equaliser, two for Gary Alexander made sure of fairly easy points…
…Manager Jackett says, "I don't think we have played better at creating chances. Part of that was with Walsall's approach - they came with two up front. They tried to get the ball up early and press us in midfield and that did help make an open game."

3rd April The South London Press confirms reports that the club have made a u-turn on the family enclosure relocation. Andy Ambler is quoted, "The Family Club area will still be in the West Stand but a certain number of fans who have been there for a very long time will be able to stay there. They will have to comply with the family enclosure rules but we have listened to the concerns of some season ticket holders and compromised and that is what good management is all about."
